One of the best preserved Late Baroque palaces in Slovenia, Besenghi degli Ughi, is located in Izola. It was built from 1775 until 1781, an exceptionally short period for the time. The palace was commissioned by a well known and powerful Istrian family Besenghi from Filipp Dongetti, the architect from Milan, one of the most important architects of the time. A 13th century stone lion adorns the corner of the palace. The Besenghi palace had a library, which 3000 copies of the 16th and 17th century books and manuscripts have been preserved. Today, the premises of the Besenghi degli Ughi Palace are used by the music school.
