Nesactium was the seat of the Histri, the Iron Age people who inhabited Istria. Numerous archaeological findings show its permanent population, from the prehistoric era until the Late Antiquity.
Nesactium
Despite being densely populated during history, Marčana was depopulated by the plague epidemics. The area was systematically inhabited by refugees fleeing from the Ottoman Turks.
Historical sources witness of densely populated Marčana and its surroundings from ancient times. However, due to the 15th century plague epidemics, Marčana and its surrounding area had almost been depopulated. The area was then systematically populated with refugees fleeing from the Ottoman Turks. The village is dominated by the 15th century three-nave parish church of St. Peter and Paul. The mediaval church of St. Anthony of Padua is also located in Marčana.
