Picturesque Labin obtained its current shape between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was a birthplace of Matija Vlačića Ilirik, the closest associate of Martin Luther.
Labin is the birthplace of the Reformation philosopher Matija Vlačić Ilirik, Martin Luther’s closest associate. Today’s picturesque town centre dates from the 16th - 18th century. It has many Renaissance and Baroque patrician buildings. The town gates from 1646, the fortifications, the loggia and chapels stand out. The basement of the museum has been dedicated to miners, once the main force of the town and its surrounding area. During a great strike of 1921, miners declared one-month self-government - the Republic of Labin.
