The karst relief is characteristic for the major part of Istria. Amost 70% of its surface emerged on limestone, which has changed under the influence of water. The water in limestone makes numerous holes and cracks for its free flow which results in the emergence of caves, pits and caverns, of which there are up to 2000 across Istria.
