There is a large number of preserved frescoes in Istria, mostly in churches throughout the peninsula. Preserved frescoes range from the lavish ones to individual and small fragments.
The volume of preserved murals on a relatively small area such as Istria is astonishing. There are about 140 sites ranging from large and lavish fresco series to individual scenes and small fragments. First frescoes in Istria emerged in the late 8th and early 9th century. In the 11th century, the true production started lasting until the mid 16th century. Istrian frescoes are live and authentic art. They are almost all located in picturesque churches throughout the peninsula.
